St. Mary's girls come up short against North Valley

MERLIN ' A one-sided performance for the St. Mary's girls soccer team turned sour in more ways than one on Thursday.

The Crusaders, despite controlling the action for much of the contest, lost, 2-0, to North Valley and also lost their starting goalkeeper to injury.

It was a crucial District 6 contest, with the Knights improving to 4-1 in league as Jessica Lucas and Emily Verser each scored

St. Mary's (6-4-1, 3-3 District 6) must win its final two games and hope for several teams above them to lose for a shot at making the state playoffs.

Lucas scored the game's opening goal in the 18th minute from 30 yards out and Verser added the final score with 15 minutes to play.

The Crusaders' keeper, Katie Lanahan, held North Valley in check for much of the game until having to exit after getting a shot to the nose with 20 minutes to play.

We were really controlling the game until Katie went out, said St. Mary's coach Suzanne Irons.

We'd done an excellent job up until that point, and I think the team lost focus and forgot who they were supposed to be marking.

St. Mary's fell to 6-4-1 overall and 3-3 in District 6 play.

We just couldn't put the ball in the net, said Irons. It wasn't lack of effort; the girls did a remarkable job.

ROGUE RIVER 6, ILLINOIS VALLEY 2 ' At Rogue River, Rogue River scored three goals in each half while picking up its first Skyline Conference victory.

Larae Rojas, Jennifer Fitch and Brandy Hamre each had first-half goals as the Chieftains held a 3-1 advantage.

CASCADE CHRISTIAN 4, SOUTH MEDFORD JV 0 ' Freshman Katie O'Brien scored all four goals for visiting Cascade Christian in the non-league match.

O'Brien produced two first-half goals, one at the eighth minute and the other at the 20th.

Stephanie Cotta assisted O'Brien on her third goal at the 48th minute. Midway through the half, Jessica Tresser passed to O'Brien for the final goal.

At Murphy, Dillon Borta scored his seventh hat trick of the season in the Skyline conference contest.

Borta has 26 goals on the season.

Devin Smith scored one of the goals for Hidden Valley and added two assists, while Daron McGlothlin and Danny Richard tallied the other goals.

ASHLAND JV 3, ST. MARY'S 2 ' Sean Snider and Duncan MacDiarmid scored goals for St. Mary's in the non-league contest at St. Mary's.

Michael Staver assisted on Snider's goal at the 62nd minute, and Josh Jones found MacDiarmid with a corner kick as the game wound down.
