Crater downs Brookings-Harbor to claim third at tourney

MURPHY ' A burst in the third quarter helped the Crater boys basketball team put away Brookings-Harbor, 62-49, to claim third place in the eight-team Hidden Valley Tournament on Saturday.

The Comets maintained a comfortable 10-point advantage at the half, then cranked up the defense during a 25-10 surge in the third period en route to a 62-49 victory.

We just picked up our defensive intensity in the (third) quarter, said Crater coach Matt Meunier. We got in the passing lanes and tipped a few passes that led to some easy baskets.

Andrew Norum led a balanced scoring attack with 16 points, while Colin Schoonover added 14 for the Comets, who improved to 4-5 in non-conference play.

Mark Metzler led all scorers with 20 points for Brookings-Harbor.

ASHLAND 56, DALLAS 30 ' At Dallas, Ashland shrugged off a 20-minute delay to the start of the game and hammered the hosts in the Dallas Tournament.

After the gym's lights blew a fuse and were re-lit, the Grizzlies (7-3) forced 31 turnovers against just seven of their own. Bryan Clevenger scored a game-high 13 points, while Nick Palmesano and Chris Presicci swiped five steals apiece.

EUREKA, CALIF. 48, KLAMATH UNION 47 ' At Klamath Falls, Eureka escaped when last-gasp shot by Klamath Union didn't drop in the non-conference game.

KU's Jacob Wynn took an inbounds pass and dribbled the length of the floor with 6.5 seconds left, but his shot didn't fall.

The Pelicans (7-3) led by 13 points at the half, but scored just seven third-quarter points.

Zach Tucker, Paxton Ritter and Wynn all score 11 points apiece for the Pelicans, who were 11-of-18 from the free-throw line.

' At the Cottage Grove Tournament, Mike Smith scored 12 points and Martin Gonzalez added 11 as Phoenix placed third.

The Pirates (3-6) overcame a 15-9 first-period deficit with a 20-point scoring effort in the second quarter. Smith, who had eight 3-pointers in two games, hit four treys.

The Mustangs (4-5) held the Crusaders to 11 points in the first half while posting 33 of their own.

Michael Fiddler had seven points to lead St. Mary's, which finished 1-of-14 from the 3-point line.

' At the Butte Falls Tournament, Thomas Rios drained a 25-foot jumper as time ran out to give Hosanna Christian the championship.

Rios had a game-high 33 points, but the last three proved to be the difference. Jed Rowden led the Loggers (6-4) with 21 points, and Tony Beals added 13.
