Johannes' big night powers Prospect over Hosanna Christian

PROSPECT ' James Johannes pulled off a pretty good Magic Johnson impersonation to lead the Prospect boys basketball team to victory Saturday.

A 6-foot-7 senior, Johannes turned in a Magic-esque line of 17 points, 14 rebounds, 10 assists and 10 blocks to power the Cougars past Hosanna Christian, 58-52, in Skyline A League play.

I don't think that happens very often, Prospect head coach Mike Gordon said of Johannes' quadruple-double.

Nor does a 33-point explosion like the one 6-4 senior Bryon Andresen had, making 12-for-18 shots from the field and 9-of-12 at the free-throw line.

We were penetrating with Johannes and then dishing to Andresen, and they didn't really match up with that, said Gordon, whose use of a 6-7 player at point guard is rare at any level ' and reminiscent of Johnson, a 6-9 Hall-of-Famer regarded as on the best point guards, and players, ever.

That (Johannes-Andresen) combination is really effective.

Prospect also relied on a diamond-and-one defense to slow Hosanna's Thomas Rios, a high-scoring senior guard. Junior Jimmy Pace and freshman Ricky Miller shadowed Rios, holding him to 10 points after Rios scored 25 in a 69-46 Lions' win over the Cougars on Jan. 18.

Probably that was as important as anything, Gordon said.
