Bulldog boxers earn split at tournament

OLATHE, Kan. ' The Bulldog Boxing Club earned a split in its bouts Thursday night at the National Silver Gloves amateur boxing tournament.

The Medford group had two fighters going Thursday in Lorenzo Arenas and Javier Torres, but only Arenas advanced into today's semifinals.

Fighting in the age 14-15, super heavyweight division (201 pounds and over), Arenas scored a three-round decision over Jose Garcia of Minnesota.

Lorenzo just dominated the fight, said Bulldog Boxing trainer Jim Pedrojetti.

Arenas won the National Silver Gloves in 2001, and will fight in today's semifinals.

Another fighter set to compete in the semifinals today is Sky Diamond, who drew a bye in the age 10-11, 55-pound division. Diamond will fight Cesar Cervin from Texas today.

Torres, 14, seemed the biggest lock of all to make it into today's semifinals, but the 156-pounder fell short in his bid in a 3-2 decision to Darrell Parker of Kentucky.

Torres advanced to the Silver Gloves finals last year and won in 2000.
