Bonanza shoots down St. Mary's in SCL contest

BONANZA ' What Bonanza lacked in height, it made up for with strong shooting and tenacious defense in downing St. Mary's Friday in Southern Cascade League girls basketball.

The Antlers, the SCL co-leader at 8-1, overcame 28 points, 16 rebounds and five assists by Crusaders post Brittany Farrer to pin a 67-56 loss on the visitors.

Farrer, a 6-foot-1 sophomore, enjoyed her biggest scoring night of the season.

Bonanza's not a very tall team, said St. Mary's coach Pete Zappas. They press you the whole game, and they all go about 5-7 or 5-8. Brittany used her size, and we put in a new wrinkle on offense for her, where she posts high or low in certain situations.

She had a big game here last year, and I think she was fired up to play in this gym again.

A dismal third quarter did in the Crusaders.

They were outscored 17-8, in part because of three 3-pointers and the pressing defense by Bonanza.

Bonanza's probably the best pressing team in the league, said Zappas. They caused a lot of turnovers that came back to haunt us in the second half.

Alex Tomlinson added nine rebounds and four assists for St. Mary's (6-8, 2-7 SCL).
