SOU wrestlers move step closer to extending winning season streak

ASHLAND ' The third-ranked Southern Oregon University wrestlers moved within one dual-meet victory of extending the school's NAIA record-setting winning season streak by downing archrival Pacific University 31-9 at McNeal Pavilion on Friday.

The Raiders (5-3), who boast 32 consecutive winning seasons and have two duals remaining on the season slate, grabbed a 16-0 lead by capturing the first four bouts en route to topping the NCAA Div. III Boxers (3-13) for the second time this season.

We didn't wrestle as intensely as I would have liked but I was pleased with the overall outcome, Raider coach Mike Ritchey said. We'll obviously need to raise our intensity (today against San Francisco State).

All four SOU All-Americans and individually ranked competitors ' fourth-ranked senior Nolan Harris (133), second-ranked junior Colin Murphy (141), second-ranked junior Brian Wilson (165) and eighth-ranked senior Chris Huntley (174) ' emerged victorious, and Murphy and Huntley looked especially sharp in qualifying for bonus team scoring.

Murphy sprang a takedown then held Garret Miyake down for the final 24 seconds to earn a major decision, while Huntley needed just over two minutes to pin Garren Bremer.

Huntley's a dominant wrestler right now, Ritchey said. He has a good game plan where he's on you like a grizzly bear on a gut pile. He catches guys off-guard and the next thing you know the match is over.

Pacific averted a team score shutout when freshman Cory VanSteenwyk decisioned freshman Jimmy Grochowsky 5-2 at 157. Three bouts later, third-ranked Boxer junior Ryan Jones survived two third-period takedowns by freshman Mike O'Brien in a 6-4 win, and senior Sam Baumer recorded a 5-3 decision against Grant Thompson at 197.

SOU, which improved to 34-5 all-time against the Forest Grove school, received forfeits at 125 and 285.

The Raider mat men have a chance to clinch the winning season milestone today in a — p.m. home clash against fifth-ranked NCAA Div. II luminary San Francisco State.
