Oregon Tech's Miles claims 700th victory in win over Raider men

ASHLAND ' Longtime Oregon Institute of Technology men's basketball coach Dan Miles captured his 700th career coaching victory with a 73-60 Owl victory over Southern Oregon at McNeal Pavilion Saturday night.

Miles, a former Raider football, basketball and baseball standout, improved to 700-319 spanning the past 32 seasons when the first-place and seventh-ranked Owls (23-3, 11-3) extended a 37-30 halftime edge with a 10-0 run to start the second half.

The Raiders (7-19, 3-11) partially recovered from a 19-point deficit (53-34) with a 16-4 spurt before OIT's 47-35 rebounding advantage and 47-percent field goal shooting ultimately doomed SOU.

Owl junior Kevin Baker scored a game-high 20 points and had 11 rebounds, while Matt Johnson had 16 points and a game-best 12 rebounds.

SOU, which missed 21-of-30 second-half shot attempts and dropped its sixth straight and ninth over the past 10 outings, received a team-high 14 points off the bench by freshman forward Jared Abell and 10 from fellow frosh Ryan Gabel.

The squads battled to three ties and exchanged the lead nine times in the opening 15 minutes before the Techsters used a 11-3 skein to take charge shortly before halftime.
