South extends SOC win streak to 31

Some schools go decades without winning 31 straight conference games.

Fourth-ranked South Medford has now done it twice in the span of six years.

Spurred by a second-half surge, the Panthers accomplished the school record-tying feat Friday night with a 71-44 home victory over Crater.

South Medford (19-1, 11-0 SOC) can establish a school mark Tuesday on senior night when the Panthers play host to Eagle Point (7-14, 0-11 SOC).

The Panthers, who can also clinch a share of the SOC title with a win over the Eagles, close out the regular season at Grants Pass (9-2 SOC) next Friday and Feb. 27 at Roseburg (6-5 SOC).

South's last SOC loss came on its home court Jan. 30, 2001, against Roseburg (51-38). The prior streak of 31 straight games began after a conference-opening loss to Klamath Union in the 1996-97 season, and ended in the opener to the 1998-99 campaign.

Against Crater, South blew open a 10-point game with a dominant second half as the Panthers rode the shooting of Jeremy Frantz.

After going scoreless in the first half, Frantz scored seven of his game-high 17 points in the third. He then hit three straight 3-pointers in the fourth before heading to the bench midway through the quarter.

We just did a better job of defending, and then we got in transition and found Jeremy for some good looks at the basket, South coach Dennis Murphy said of the second-half surge.

Eric Fischer (12), Andy Hagert (11) and Craig Johnson (10) each hit double digits in South's balanced attack.

Crater's Andrew Norum scored seven of his team-high 13 points in the first quarter.
