Knights edge Mustangs for third straight win

MERLIN ' North Valley continued its late- season push for a playoff spot in Skyline Conference boys basketball.

The Knights increased their winning streak to three games with a 60-51 victory over Hidden Valley on Tuesday.

North Valley pulled to within one game of Hidden Valley for the final berth in the Skyline Conference playoffs with one game remaining.

We came out too slow, said Hidden Valley coach Norm Hayter. They played good defense.

Darren Clark scored 17 of his game-high 23 points in the first half as North Valley led 27-19 at the break.

The Mustangs (10-13, 6-7 Skyline) cut the margin to 51-47 with 3:56 to go, but the Knights answered with an 8-0 run to seal the contest.

Andrew Saeman grabbed seven rebounds to lead North Valley to a 32-25 edge on the boards.

PHOENIX 71, LAKEVIEW 58 ' At Lakeview, Phoenix did most of its damage in the second quarter, outscoring Lakeview 26-12, to roll to the Skyline Conference victory.

The Pirates (15-8 overall, 11-2 Skyline) jumped to a 41-23 lead at the half, but missed 12 free throws in the final eight minutes. Lakeview scored 22 fourth-quarter points to make a run in the end.

Brett Ellis finished with 19 points to lead the Pirates. Jason Lockett, a 6-foot junior, had 14 points and Martin Gonzalez added 11.

Logan Sheridan, a 6-4 post, led the Honkers (7-15, 3-10 Skyline) with 17 points and seven rebounds. Garrett Childress added 13 points and nine boards.

ILLINOIS VALLEY 58, ROGUE RIVER 36 ' At Cave Junction, Illinois Valley guard Brian Paul scored a game-high 18 points as the Cougars held Rogue River to nine second-half points during a Skyline Conference win.

Illinois Valley (11-12, 5-8 Skyline) held a 35-27 lead at the break, then outscored the Chieftains 23-9 to close out the game.

J.T. Vaughn had 10 points to lead Rogue River, which fell to 2-11 in conference play.

MAZAMA 64, HENLEY 45 ' At Klamath Falls, Levell Hesia's game-high 22 points helped Mazama clinch at least a share of the Skyline Conference title with the win.

Hesia also had 10 assists as the Vikings improved to 12-1 in Skyline play.

Mazama forced 17 turnovers in the first half en route to a 33-8 lead at halftime.

Eric Brosterhous had 13 points for Mazama.

Chris Hargrave led Henley with 13 points, including three 3-pointers.
