Phoenix rallies past Lakeview

Skyline Girls

PHOENIX ' The Phoenix High girls basketball team took a page from the Al Davis songbook: Just win baby.

The Pirates erased a five-point, fourth-quarter deficit to beat Lakeview 52-46 in overtime to keep their hopes alive for the No. 2 Skyline Conference seed.

Five-foot-three sophomore Ashley McCarty chased down a long rebound and found a streaking Kelly Meredith down the floor ahead of the pack for the layup to give Phoenix a four-point lead in the waning seconds to seal the deal.

It would have been easy to pack it in, losing a nine-point lead at the half, but the kids sucked it up, got it to overtime and got the win at home, Phoenix coach Kyle Walker said. We were pretty effective offensively tonight. Sometimes it's not how you win, but that you hang in there and get it done.

The Pirates (14-8 overall, 10-3 Skyline) led 28-17 at the half, but Lakeview (9-4 Skyline) stormed back, outscoring Phoenix 13-9 in the third period to cut the Pirates' lead to 37-30.

The Honkers took the lead midway through the final period.

Lakeview really picked up its defense in the second half, Walker said. But we kept fighting.

Phoenix's Kristy Duffell drained a 3-pointer to tie the game 44-44 with 1:15 left in regulation. Lakeview missed on the ensuing possession and Phoenix held the ball for the final shot, but came up short and the game went to overtime.

The Pirates outscored the Honkers 8-2 in the extra session to ice the game. Phoenix will finish the regular season at Merlin Friday against North Valley with a chance to obtain the No. 2 seed and a home playoff game.

Megan Bradbury scored 22 points to lead the Honkers. McCarty scored 14. Kat Cox had 13 points and 13 rebounds and Meredith finished with 13 points and 14 rebounds for the Pirates.
