Outdoors show offers glimpse at what's new

CENTRAL POINT ' An outdoor recreation show this weekend gives Southern Oregonians a taste of what's new in the outdoor industry as well as what's out there in the woods and waters.

More than 100 booths and 200 exhibits will be packed into the Compton Arena at the Jackson County Expo for the show, now in its third year.

Last year, more than 12,000 people toured the venue, and show manager Joe Pate expects a similar draw among the region's diverse group of outdoor interests.

We've had record attendance in Eugene and Roseburg, and we're hoping that will carry over to Medford, Pate says.

This region has so many different interests, from hunting to fly-fishing and backpacking, that there's something here for everyone, he says.

Some of the main features include the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife's 50-foot live fish tank and a fishing pond for kids. There also will be an air-rifle range offered by the ODFW and a kids' archery range offered by DewClaw Archery Supplies in Medford.

The U.S. Army Matterhorn Climbing Wall will be there for would-be climbers, and a 180-foot casting pool will house fly-fishing demonstrations by the Oregon Council of the Federation of Fly Fishers, the Rogue Flyfishers Association and the Southern Oregon Fly Fishers.

Head and antler measurements will be done at the show, and booths will include exhibits of record game mounts as well as the shed-antler collection of Steve Holte of Eagle Point.

Various government and advocacy groups will have booths there, as well as taxidermists, outfitters, guides and several boat companies.

The show's major sponsors are KDRV television and Bi-Mart.
