Morton pitches Grants Pass to sweep over Crater

CENTRAL POINT ' Grants Pass' Jessica Morton's game was on Saturday, effectively turning out the lights on Crater.

Morton picked up pitching wins in both ends of a Southern Oregon Conference doubleheader sweep for the Cavers.

The Comets (5-3, 0-2 SOC) managed one hit during a 3-0 loss in the opener, then came up on the short end of a 4-2 decision in the nightcap in the SOC opener for both teams.

Morton held Crater hitless through five innings before Jenni Bittle broke through with a single.

Morton was very effective against us today, said Crater coach Chris Arnold, whose team was minus three starters due to disciplinary reasons. She painted the corners really well and mixed up her pitches effectively.

— Grants Pass, now 2-0 in conference play, only mustered three hits, but came through with RBI hits by Justine Cerda and Ashley Bellum.

In Game 2, the Comets grabbed a 2-0 lead off Cavers' starter Amber Gallego before a three-run fifth inning and an insurance run in the seventh by Grants Pass spelled the end for Crater's chances.

Morton finished the final five innings for the victory.

We made some mistakes in that fifth inning that kind of compounded themselves, said Arnold. Grants Pass is a very aggressive team on the base paths, and we certainly can't make mistakes like we did against a team like that.

Bellum and Morton each had two hits to lead Grants Pass in the nightcap.
