New lineup, same result for North girls
Short-handed or not, the North Medford girls tennis team made short work of South Medford in Southern Oregon Conference action at North Medford High on Thursday, winning 9-0.
McKenzie Hilmer, Melissa Witten, Valerie Iverson, Kelsey Thornton and Ingrid Wahlberg lost a combined seven games in sweeping the five singles matches for the Black Tornado (7-2, 4-1 SOC), which also scored a 9-0 win over South three weeks ago.
In doubles play, Carleen Bullard and Kami Hwang survived three sets and a third-set tiebreaker in the No. — spot, and Jessica Lenford and Chalsea Shoenlein prevailed in three sets at the No. 4 position.
The duos of Janell Petersen and Rachel Ryan and Heather Dumas and Lauren Schwartz were victorious in straight sets.
— We're missing a lot of girls because of the band trip and other activities, said North head coach Dale Jensen. So we had to call up some of the JV girls. But it was good. They all got some good experience.
Jensen was pleased, in particular, with the efforts of Bullard and Hwang to creep past South's Kelly Rulon and Emma Close, 6-3, 0-6, 7-6 (7-2).

NORTH MEDFORD 5, SOUTH MEDFORD 4 ' At Rogue Valley Swim and Tennis Club, North Medford won four of five singles matches in the win over its cross-town rival.
After North's Tyler Wilson posted a comfortable win at No. — singles, the Black Tornado's Brady Inn needed a third-set win over Ben Works, and Dustin Loomis of North narrowly downed Craig Johnson, 9-7 in a pro-set match, en route to the victory. Tom Tice posted another close win for North at No. 5 singles.

NORTH MEDFORD 3, GRANTS PASS 0 ' Three North Medford pitchers combined on a two-hitter in the non-conference win.
The game was played at North Mountain Park in Ashland because of unplayable conditions elsewhere.
The second-ranked Black Tornado (11-1 overall) got strong pitching from Mallorie Hoover, Kendra Strahm and Keri Sevano.
Hoover struck out five in three innings and allowed both hits. Strahm (3-1) got the win with three perfect innings. Sevano retired the side in the seventh.
North scored first in the fifth inning, when Strahm was hit by a pitch, advanced to third on Stephanie Haskett's single and scored on a passed ball.
An inning later, Brandi Paxton's leadoff double was followed by a Darcy Cordell triple. Megan Lamson then singled in Cordell.
