Raiders set intrasquad scrimmage for Sunday

ASHLAND ' The Southern Oregon University 2003 football season technically kicks off Sunday at Raider Stadium with the school's second-annual spring intrasquad game.

The 64-snap controlled scrimmage begins at noon and features 13 returning starters and 40 letter-winners from last year's 8-3 Raider team. SOU advanced to the quarterfinals of the NAIA playoffs and finished with a No. 6 rank-ing.

Admission is free.

The event consists of eight series of eight snaps featuring the first- and second-team offensive and defensive groups. The opening series features the No. — offense versus the No. — defense.

Each series begins with the ball on the 35-yard line and will culminate after eight plays unless the offense has progressed inside the 10. If so, the drive will be completed.

— Offensive players will don the home black jerseys, while defenders will be clad in the road whites.

Headlining the event are the squad's four returning senior All-Americans ' running back Dusty McGrorty, defensive end Garret Gelker, kicker/punter Steve Baker and offensive lineman Todd Wesolowski ' as well as senior quarterback Dan Woodward of Eagle Point, who passed for 1,900 yards as a junior.

McGrorty is only 848 yards and four touchdowns shy of surpassing former Raider Griff Yates as the top rusher and scorer in Northwest small-college history.

Southern Oregon, which is 30-11 dating back to the final game of the 1998 season, opens the nine-game 2003 regular season Sept. 20 at home against Linfield College.
