Upset of Mazama gives North Valley third place

Upset of Mazama gives North Valley third placeMERLIN ' Sometimes a loss isn't necessarily a bad thing.

That's the motto Mazama baseball coach Jeff Sturgeon is taking following the Vikings' first Skyline Conference defeat of the season Saturday.

North Valley, after dropping a 15-0 decision in Game 1, came back to take a 9-8 victory in the nightcap of the doubleheader.

Drew Deshane's infield single plated two runs to push the Knights in front during a sixth-inning rally.

The win, coupled with a loss by Henley on Saturday, clinched third place in the Skyline Conference for the Knights. A victory over Phoenix in the regular season finale on Tuesday would move North Valley into sole possession of second.

— It's disappointing, sure, said Sturgeon, whose team is now 21-4 overall and 19-1 in conference play with one regular season game remaining. But I also think it could be a bit of an eye-opener for our team. I also think we could build from this loss.

The third-ranked Vikings weren't complacent in the opener, jumping to an 8-0 lead after two innings then finishing off with three in the bottom of the fifth to end the game due to the 10-run mercy rule.

Dallas Hubble had four hits for Mazama, while Mike Butcher ran his pitching record to 6-0 with the win.

Kyle Blank had three RBIs and Hubble two in the nightcap for the Vikings, who trailed 6-3 after three innings but temporarily jumped in front following a four-run fifth.

Geoff Phelps, Ariah Nead and Deshane each had two hits for North Valley, which improved to 16-9 overall and 13-7 in conference action.
