Mustangs take Pepsi Challenge ... and lose
EUGENE ' The bubble burst for the Medford Mustangs on Tuesday.
The Mustangs rolled into Swede Johnson Stadium riding a nine-game winning streak and undefeated in American Legion AAA Area 4 action.
But the Eugene Pepsi Challengers got a little revenge after losing to Medford in last year's state championship game by registering an Area 4 doubleheader victory, 8-1 and 7-5.
Cody Newell, who defeated North Medford twice during the prep baseball season, tossed a four-hit complete game with nine strikeouts in the opener.
Uncharacteristically, the Mustangs (22-3, 4-2 Area 4) had their defense fail them in the twin bill.
— In Game 1, two Medford errors in the first inning led to three unearned runs.
The Challengers led 5-0 after two innings, which was plenty for Newell.
In the nightcap, Eugene again grabbed an early lead with two unearned runs in the second.
The Challengers added a run on Ryan Royster's sacrifice fly in the third.
Solo home runs by James Mannion in the fourth and sixth innings kept the Eugene offense fueled.
The Mustangs finally got their bats cranking in the seventh, when Evan McArthur's two-run double and Jimmy Ulrey's second triple of the game highlighted a four-run outburst.
Medford's last-ditch rally ended on Reese Lamson's hard groundout to third.
The Mustangs received two hits each in the second game from McArthur, Ulrey and Dustin Butler.
