Mustangs almost perfect in final regular-season doubleheader

GRANTS PASS ' The Medford Mustangs completed American Legion AAA Area 4 play in style Thursday.

Medford pitchers Chad Hegdahl and Brett Timmerman came one out away from pitching back-to-back perfect games against the Grants Pass Nuggets at the All Sports Park.

After Hegdahl recorded a five-inning perfect game during a 15-0 victory in the opener, Timmerman followed with 20 straight outs in the nightcap.

But a two-out walk to Josh McGowan spoiled Timmerman's bid for consecutive perfect games.

— Mustangs' shortstop Evan McArthur preserved Timmerman's no-hitter by flagging a solid grounder by Ariah Nead behind the second-base bag and firing to first for the out to end Medford's 8-0 win.

The double victory runs the Mustangs win streak to 14 and clinches the Area 4 championship.

Medford (47-7, 16-4 Area 4) will open a state sub-tournament best-of-3 series at home Thursday.

Hegdahl (7-1) only threw 47 pitches in Game 1. His only 3-2 count came to Speedy Ortiz leading off the fifth inning.

Medford ended the game early with an 11-run outburst in the fifth. McArthur, Mike Allen and Dustin Butler each had two hits in the inning.

McArthur went 6-for-7 in the doubleheader to run his consecutive game hitting streak to 14.

McArthur also had four RBIs in the twin bill, tying him with Jordan Stevens (1983) and Shawn Walker (1997) for a club record of 86 on the season.

Allen and Butler each went 3-for-4 in the opener, while Rob Folsom had a 3-for-5, four RBI performance in the second game.
