Pirates sink themselves in loss to Knights

Pirates sink themselves in loss to Knights

PHOENIX ' Mistakes proved costly for Phoenix in Skyline Conference football Friday.

The Pirates suffered six turnovers and 14 penalties during a 24-20 loss to North Valley at Jack Woodward Stadium.

We played well, Phoenix coach Gordon Crowston said. We got frustrated because of the penalties, and we let that affect us.

Phoenix turnovers set up North Valley's first two scores.

North Valley capitalized on a fumbled punt at the Phoenix 30-yard line for its first touchdown. Geoff Phelps' 11-yard run completed the three-play drive with 7:25 left in the first quarter.

— A fumbled center-quarterback exchange gave North Valley the ball at the Phoenix 40 later in the period. The Knights cashed in on Drew DeChenne's 30-yard field goal for a 10-0 lead at the three-minute mark.

Phoenix overcame its early problems to take a 20-10 halftime lead.

Jimi Lockheed had touchdown runs of 26 and 11 yards, and the Pirates cashed in on a 26-yard TD pass from Matt Hagert to Martin Gonzalez with 1:42 remaining.

Phelps' second touchdown of the game, a 29-yard run with 2:08 to go in the third quarter, put North Valley ahead for good.

The Pirates had one last chance but fumbled at the North Valley 4 on second-and-goal with 1:47 left in the game.

The Pirates fumbled eight times, losing four, and racked up 127 yards in penalties.

Simon Fraser paced the Phoenix ground attack with 105 yards on 18 carries. The Pirates gained 164 yards rushing and 103 through the air.

North Valley rushed for 134 yards, with Phelps gaining 106. The Knights added 154 passing.

We were pleased with a lot of the things we did to keep us in the game, said Crowston. The effort and intensity were fantastic. We need to do a better job eliminating mistakes and maintaining our composure.

Jakob Burkhalter converted a PAT kick after Glendale's first touchdown, and it held up as the two teams missed on five other opportunities.

The Pirates scored the deciding touchdown with 10 minutes to play on a Joel Snelling 1-yard run, and the Challengers (1-1, 0-1 SCL) were unable to mount another scoring threat.

Cascade Christian trailed 13-6 at halftime but moved in front 18-13 with TD runs of — yards by Ryan Kridel and 4 yards by Ben Kinney in the third quarter.

Kinney, who was held to 26 yards rushing, scored the Challengers' first TD on a 2-yard run. He set up the play with a 65-yard reception.
