Crusaders get back on track with SCL victory

A day after St. Mary's had its 26-game Southern Cascade League boys basketball winning streak snapped, the Crusaders got back on track.

Led by a new generation 'freshman Garrett Fiddler and sophomore Austin Grant ' St. Mary's registered a 64-48 victory over visiting Glendale Saturday.

St. Mary's is rebuilding after winning three consecutive SCL titles behind league player of the year and two-time all-state post Michael Fiddler.

We're ready to start another streak, said St. Mary's head coach Tim Pflug. This team is more athletic, but we're still struggling with our identity. We do some things well, but then our inexperience shows up.

Garrett Fiddler, who was playing in his second straight game after missing the previous five because of a stress fracture in his foot, scored a game-high 18 points.

The 6-foot-7 post was 8 of 9 from the field and tied two other teammates for a team-best six rebounds.

— We try to get the ball in to Garrett, Pflug said. He's very fundamentally sound for a freshman. He's a true post and has good moves.

Grant did an effective job of running a Crusaders' attack that only committed 10 turnovers.

I like his (Grant) decision-making, Pflug said of the point guard. He likes the ball in his hands at the tough times.

Grant also scored 17 points, handed out seven assists and corralled six rebounds.

St. Mary's only led by three points at halftime, but got a little breathing room by outscoring the Pirates 17-11 in the third quarter.

Grant's brother, junior Colin Grant, contributed to the Crusaders third-quarter burst.

They went to a zone and he (Colin Grant) hit two big 3s that gave us a shot of momentum, said Pflug.
