St. Mary's storms past Glendale

Recovery became discovery for the St. Mary's girls basketball team Saturday.

Burying Friday night's 53-31 loss at Bonanza, the Crusaders dumped defending Southern Cascade League champion Glendale, 47-27, at the St. Mary's gym.

The Crusaders (3-6, 1-1 SCL) held the Pirates (4-7, 1-1) to just 15 points after the opening quarter, through which St. Mary's had a 15-12 lead.

It's our best game of the year, said first-year St. Mary's head coach Rick Jackson.

Senior posts Analise Montan and Alex Tomlinson provided the offense with 16 points apiece.

They both played really aggressive offensively, Jackson said. They did a good job of finding the soft spot in the zone and then taking it to the basket real hard.

— Junior point guard Kelly Walden spearheaded a defensive effort that kept Glendale contained and confused. St. Mary's showed everything from 1-2-2 and 1-3-1 zones to a half-court trap in order to keep the ball away from Pirates post Kalaigh Causey.

After a 2-12 SCL campaign a year ago, the Crusaders are improving, much to Jackson's delight.

We played by far our best defensive game, Jackson said. To come back and have some energy after the loss at Bonanza is nice to see.
