Herrera paces North to win

EAGLE POINT ' Drew Herrera set the tone for North Medford in Southern Oregon Conference boys basketball Friday.

The junior guard efficiently directed the Black Tornado attack during a 73-28 blowout over Eagle Point.

Herrera scored 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field to go with seven assists and seven steals. Equally impressively, he was only charged with just one turnover.

(Herrera) found the open man and directed them well in transition, Eagle Point coach Keith Williams said. He took care of the basketball. He delivered it where it needed to be.

The Black Tornado (9-5, 3-1 SOC) got off to a quick start and built a 43-13 halftime lead.

— They got to the rim pretty frequently in the first half, Williams said. We did a good job handling their full-court pressure, but we turned it over in the half court and they were off to the races. They can transition the ball in a hurry.

Eagle Point (2-10, 0-4 SOC) didn't help its cause by shooting just 8 of 42 from the field, including 5 of 27 in the opening half.

Those types of numbers aren't going to win you many ball games, said Williams. We couldn't throw it in the ocean.

Two of the Eagles' top offensive threats ' Junior Malgarejo and Mychal Williams ' combined for 1-of-19 shooting from the field.

North Medford dominated the boards by a 38-23 margin. Ben Running led North with seven rebounds.

They definitely have athleticism and good size, said Williams. They're more physical than we are. We didn't get a lot of second-chance opportunities.
