Second-half burst propels Challengers

GILCHRIST ' A first-half shooting slumber turned into a second-half shooting spree, with Katie O'Brien serving as catalyst for the Cascade Christian girls basketball team.

Erasing a 23-all halftime tie, the Challengers erupted for 39 points in the second half to forge a 62-41 victory and improve to 9-5 overall and 3-1 in the Southern Cascade League.

We must have shot maybe 10 percent in the first half, Cascade Christian head coach Loren King said. But the kids in the second half stepped up and did what we needed to do.

Sophomore wing O'Brien sparked the surge with 11 of her career-high 28 points in the third quarter, when she splashed three of her four 3-pointers.

She broke it open for us, King said of his leading scorer, who averages about 13 points per game.

— The Challengers went 11 deep on their bench while Gilchrist (0-4 SCL) played just five, and senior post Natalie Brown provided Cascade with tough interior defense for the second straight game.
