South wrestlers rally for win over KU

South Medford registered five falls against visiting Klamath Union in a Southern Oregon Conference dual meet Thursday.

But it was two matches where the Panthers didn't get pinned that helped South to a 40-28 victory.

Our younger kids fought hard not to get pinned, South Medford coach Ken Thompson said, and our older kids got some pins. That was a big difference for us.

Two Panthers who lost decisions in key matches were freshman Alex Cortez and sophomore Kenny Licea. Cortez dropped a 9-0 decision to Jon Brandsness at 125 and Licea lost 11-6 to Aaron Beger at 160.

Not getting pinned in those two matches gave South (2-3 SOC) an opportunity to erase a 24-4 deficit after the 275-pound bout.

— With the match starting at 152 pounds, the Pelicans won five of the first six bouts, including three by fall.

South Medford then ran off seven wins in the final eight bouts, finishing off the match with four consecutive pins.

Travis Harvey, who moved up in weight to 145, sealed the team victory with a pin over Mike Sabo in the final bout.

(Harvey) dominated and kept the pressure on to get the pin in the middle of the third round, said Thompson. We came out tonight and wrestled hard and were aggressive.
