Eagles subdue field in own tournament

EAGLE POINT ' Eagle Point won its own 13-team wrestling tournament Saturday, compiling 307 points for a 54-point cushion over second-place South Albany.

The Eagles had four individual champions: Jake McCoy (125 pounds), Shane Kell (140), Kevin Miers (171) and Tyler Cam (275).

North Medford's Jon Ulrey (112), Chris Platt (152) and Rob Folsom (160) were other area champions, and the Black Tornado finished third with 242 team points.

RESER TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS ' At Hillsboro, top-ranked Crater captured four individual titles and placed 10 out of 14 wrestlers in the prestigious 16-team tournament.

The Comets scored 183&

189; points to 166 fir runner-up Newberg. Crook County (154&

189; ), Roseburg (144&

189; ) and West Linn (133) rounded out the top five.

Crater's Chase Maloney, in the 152-pound bracket, had the toughest road of the Comets' champions.

Maloney prevailed 1-0 in the semifinals against Crook County's Trent Lucas, then posted a 5-1 victory over Trent Comant of Newberg in the finals.

Other Comet winners were Bryson Gutches (135), Ron Lee (171) and Cody Clark (189).

Heavyweight Taylor Wilkerson was the only Crater runner-up.

The remainder of the Crater placers were: Cody Ponder (3rd, 160); John Bernhardt (5th, 130); Jake Vizzini (6th, 103); Tyler Weathers (6th, 119); Charlie Alexander (6th, 215).

WILLAMETTE INVITATIONAL ' At Eugene, senior Davy May was the lone Phoenix champion as the Pirates finished third in the 16th-annual tournament.

Churchill of Eugene won the 17-team event with 169&

189; points. The remainder of the top five was McKay of Salem 156, Phoenix 151, Grants Pass 149&

189; and Thurston of Springfield 135&

189; .

Illinois Valley placed eighth (96&

189; ), and North Valley was ninth (85).

May, who moved up one weight division, defeated Josh Bendix of Williamette, 12-3, for the 119-pound title.

The Pirates added four runner-ups: junior Kris Kaufman (112); senior Kevin Cowley (140); junior Ricky Farrell (160); and sophomore Riley Gibson (189).

Phoenix received a third-place finish from Tyler Jackson (171) and a fifth from Doug Stewart (145).

North Valley came away with a pair of champions. Zack Giesen, last year's Class 3A state champion at 125, won at 135. And heavyweight Trey McLean was victorious.

For Illinois Valley, Zach Pagnotta won at 145.

Grants Pass received second-place finishes from Zach Steddum (130) and Mark Stock (171).
