North can't miss in rout of Grizz

SOC Boys

On North Medford's opening possession against Ashland, Beau Hovland tossed a lob pass at the rim to Ben Running.

Running never retrieved the pass. Better yet, the ball went into the basket for a 3-point goal.

North's good fortune continued for a 72-42 victory over the Grizzlies in Southern Oregon Conference boys basketball Tuesday.

The dynamic Hovland scored 13 of his game-high 19 points in the opening period to help the Black Tornado jump out to a 25-14 lead. The senior guard was 5 of 5 from the field in the stanza, including two from 3-point range.

(Hovland) was the spark getting our team up and down and defending full court, North Medford coach Tim Sam said.

Hovland also finished with four assists.

— North Medford (10-6, 4-2 SOC) shot a sparkling 64 percent from the field.

We were transitioning and getting some inside shots, said Sam.

Senior post Ryan Lucas paced North's high shooting percentage by connecting on 6 of 7 field goals and all four free throws. Lucas contributed 16 points and seven rebounds in playing just a little more than half the game.

(Lucas) was very consistent, said Sam. He played a good all-around game in a limited number of minutes.

North outrebounded the Grizzlies, 35-25.

For Ashland (5-11, 1-5 SOC), Cory Costantino notched a team-high 12 points.
