SOU moves closer to keeping dual streak alive

ATHERTON, Calif. ' Southern Oregon University picked up a pair of dual-meet wrestling victories Friday to keep its hopes alive for a 34th consecutive winning season.

Southern Oregon opened with a 29-12 victory over Embry Riddle, then came back for a 31-11 win over Menlo College.

The pair of victories improves the Raiders record to 5-4, with road matches remaining against Pacific and Portland State next Friday and Saturday.

In the opener, Grant Thompson got the Raiders off to a successful start with an upset. Thompson, who dropped a decision to Rob Charlton the finals of Menlo Invitational Dec. 20, scored a 11-3 major decision over the Embry Riddle wrestler.

In the nightcap, Thompson got knocked off 8-6 by Menlo College's Marcus Andy to open the dual.

— But the Raiders quickly rebounded with a fall by heavyweight Wes Balensifer, a decision by Junior Valladolid and a pin by Ottow in successive matches.
