St. Mary's swarming defense stymies Lost River

MERRILL ' St. Mary's turned on the defensive heat against Lost River after halftime and pulled away for a 56-42 Southern Cascade League boys basketball victory Friday.

The Crusaders (8-6, 5-1 SCL) led 24-21 at halftime, then outscored the Raiders 17-9 in the third period.

We got out and played very good defense, St. Mary's coach Tim Pflug said. We started running and got down the court for some easy layups because of our good defense.

St. Mary's sophomore Richie Kaimie tallied 16 points to go with a big defensive effort.

— (Kaimie) is probably my most complete defender, said Pflug. He always plays on the opponent's top scorer. Tonight, he also attacked the basket. He's becoming one of my most consistent players.

Kaimie capitalized on his aggressive offense with an 8-of-11 performance from the foul line.

We had some unusual players step up tonight, said Pflug. James Kulig played a tremendous defensive game. And our bench contributed one way or another.

Lost River collapsed on Crusaders' center Garrett Fiddler inside, so the 6-foot-7 freshman was effective passing the ball. Fiddler had 10 points and five assists.

Sophomore point guard Austin Grant ran St. Mary's attack well. The Crusaders only had two turnovers in the second half and 12 for the game.

(Grant) struggled a little offensively, said Pflug, but he does so many other things. He gets the team running and gets the ball to the guy with the hot hand.

Grant and Kaimie paced the team with five steals each.
