Schoonover leads Ashland hockey to perfect record

Cody Schoonover capped an impressive weekend with a three-goal performance to help Ashland finish the season 8-0 after a 6-1 victory over Crater in the third and final prep playoff hockey game at The RRRink Saturday.

Schoonover, who scored four times in Friday's victory over South Medford, pushed the Grizzlies to a 6-0 lead entering the third period.

Robert Hayward was named Crater's most valuable player for the game after scoring the lone goal in the third period for the Comets, who finished second in the three-team league. Goalkeeper Harley Henigson was Ashland's MVP.

Tiffany Schoonover scored a pair of goals for Ashland, while Galen Sincerny added one. The Grizzlies held a decisive edge in shots with a 38-8 advantage.

In Ashland's 7-6 victory over South on Friday, Schoonover was named MVP for the Grizzlies, while Kevin Weber took home the honor for the Panthers.

— The two-day tournament capped the two-month regular season where each team played six games.

CRATER 6, SOUTH MEDFORD 5 ' Jake Keyser scored a hat trick and Robert Hayward added a pair of goals as Crater held off a late South Medford charge to claim a victory in Game 2 of a youth hockey playoff Saturday afternoon.

The Comets scored four goals in the first period and held a 6-3 lead heading into the third when Medford charged back with a pair of goals.

Brandon Thomas scored three times to lead Medford, while Andrew Madden and Jason Sender each added lone goals.

Holcomb also scored a goal for Crater, which won the shots-on-goal battle, 39-32.

Keyser was named MVP for the Comets, while Thomas earned the honor for South.


SHAMROCK RUN ' At Central Point, Ashland High's David Morgan finished in record time while winning the Shamrock Run 5-kilometer event.

Morgan, a junior at Ashland, led from start to finish and eclipsed Trevor Coolidge's previous race-high mark by 12 seconds with a time of 15 minutes, 42 seconds.

North Medford High senior Danielle Jordan won the women's overall title with a time of 18:41. Her time was a record for the 15-18-year-old division.

The 10-kilometer event was cancelled due to road construction.
