Powell named new SOU offensive coordinator
ASHLAND ' Southern Oregon University head football coach Jeff Olson didn't look far to find the school's new offensive coordinator.
Olson announced Tuesday longtime SOU offensive assistant Tom Powell will take over the Raider play-calling chores from Matt Sayre, who resigned March 9 to become head coach at College of the Siskiyous.
Powell, 47, has been involved in crafting the Raider attack for the past 18 seasons, including 17 as offensive line coach.
This was an easy decision and the best decision for our program ' especially in terms of continuity, Olson said. Tom is a dedicated, detail-oriented and well-liked coach who is already a central part of the decision-making process.
Powell served as the school's offensive coordinator in 1988, and has also handled backfield, wide receivers and special teams coaching tasks during his Raider tenure.
A 1980 graduate of Montana State-Bozeman, Powell was a noseguard on the 1976 Bobcat NCAA Division II national championship squad.
— He was voted the most valuable player in the title game.
The Seattle native, who holds a master's degree in athletic administration from Idaho State University, coached at Idaho State (1984-85) and Rocky Mountain College (1981-83) prior to his arrival in Ashland.
Powell also manages the school's club sport program, the 32-event intramural program, the award-winning National Youth Sports Program and the diverse Outdoor Program.
