Mustangs baseball meeting to be held Saturday

A meeting for those interested in playing for the Medford Mustangs American Legion AAA baseball team will be held Saturday at — p.m. at Miles Field.

The meeting is strictly informational. Any baseball player from North Medford, South Medford, Ashland, Phoenix or Cascade Christian High that has yet to reach his 19th birthday is eligible to play for the Mustangs.

McDermott signs two for Raider hoop squad

ASHLAND ' Southern Oregon University men's basketball coach Brian McDermott announced a California junior college transfer and a Washington all-state performer have signed letters of intent to compete for the Raiders.

The newest SOU recruits are junior RaShawn McAllister from San Bernardino Valley Junior College, and incoming freshman Thomas Ward from Bellarmine Prep in Tacoma, Wash.

The 6-foot, 4-inch McAllister averaged nearly 11 points at the small forward position and helped SBVJC win the 2003-04 Foothill Conference title and earn a state tournament berth. As a prep at Arlington High in Riverside, he averaged 14 points as a junior and set a county record with seven 3-point makes in a single game.

— The 5-foot, 10-inch Ward was a second-team all-state performer after compiling 15-point, five-assist and five-steal averages on the 2003-04 Washington Class 4A sixth-place squad. The three-year varsity starter also earned first-team conference and district all-star accolades.

McDermott indicated the program could land as many as four more recruits before the end of the school year.

Washington coach cancels basketball clinic at North

The basketball clinic scheduled for Saturday that was to be put on by Washington men's coach Lorenzo Romar has been canceled.

Directors of the clinic, which was slated for North Medford High, said concerns over NCAA regulations led to the cancellations.

Hegdahl gives verbal to Feather River College

Ashland High baseball standout Chad Hegdahl has made a verbal commitment to attend Feather River College in northern California next fall.

Hegdahl, a lefty, has been the top pitcher and hitter in the Southern Oregon Conference over the past two seasons. He's batting average has hovered at around .500 for most of the season and his ERA has been well below 2.00. He's been scouted by the Colorado Rockies.

Feather River is a community college in Quincy, Calif., that competes in the Golden Valley Conference. The Eagles are coached by Reed Peters.
