Card is aces as Henley tops Stayton

STAYTON ' A first-round bye had no effect on the Henley baseball team as the Hornets earned their first win of the state playoffs behind Bryn Card's 14-strikeout performance in a 5-2 triumph over Stayton.

Henley enjoyed the return of starting catcher, Jimmy Mastroianni, who played his first full game since suffering a broken knuckle in his right hand on April 16. Mastroianni's knuckle didn't appear to bother him much as he blasted two doubles and a single en route to a perfect day at the plate.

The Knapp brothers, Josh and Michael, combined for over half of the Hornets' runs as Josh knocked in two RBIs and Michael added one. Kelly Shannon also had an RBI for the Hornets.

Henley (24-3) will square off against Astoria this Friday at home following the Fishermen's 4-2 win over Central in the second round.
