Cosgriff, Crispin post big days at GP Downs

GRANTS PASS ' Apprentice jockey Katie Jo Cosgriff came into the fifth day of the season at Grants Pass Downs with just one victory.

But the novice bug rider from Montana found the touch Saturday.

Cosgriff brought home three winners to match the three by former GP Downs leading jockey Joe Crispin on the eight-race card at the Josephine County Fairgrounds.

Cosgriff finished the day in style with victories in the final two races to claim the late daily double.

In the seventh race, Cosgriff brought home the biggest long shot of the day ' the Judi Yearout-trained Panning For News ' in a &

36;3,500 claimer for fillies and mares covering 5&

189; furlongs. Panning For News returned &

— Cosgriff won on the 2-1 choice Slew's On First in the second race and completed her successful afternoon with a win on Copper Mountain in the eighth.

Cosgriff was also part of the highest-paying quinella of the day when she finished second on the long shot Real Ringer to go with winner Dr. Kitten. The 2-4 combination returned &

Crispin won his three races during a four-race span in the middle of the card. Among his winners was the John Harris-trained Juno Dat Royal Bug in a quarter horse allowance.

Crispin has 11 winners so far on the season and trails leading jockey Duane D'Amico, who had just one winner Saturday, by seven victories.

Last year's leading jockey Twyla Beckner returned to the track after missing last weekend because of a rib injury suffered on the opening day of the meet May 15. Beckner didn't post any wins, but had three seconds.
