Mustangs split twin bill with Eugene

Legion Baseball

EUGENE ' The Medford Mustangs had a big game at the plate and almost came away with an American Legion AAA Area 4 doubleheader sweep against the Eugene Challengers Tuesday.

The Mustangs stretched their winning streak to 10 games with a 10-2 victory in the opener, but the Challengers rallied for a 7-6 win in the nightcap at Swede Johnson Stadium.

The Mustangs (12-4, 5-1 Area 4) banged out 29 hits, including 11 extra-base efforts, in the twin bill, but five errors in Game 2 proved costly.

Brenton Ferguson went 6-for-8, scored five runs and drove in three to pace the Mustangs' offense in the doubleheader.

Rob Folsom, Charles Behnke and Chad Hegdahl each collected five hits on the night.

In the first game, Medford pitcher Josh Suarez went the distance, striking out four and walking three to improve his record to 2-0.

— (Suarez) mixed up his pitches and kept them off-balance, Medford assistant Dan Keck said. He got out of two bases-loaded jams late in the game. He was very composed.

The Mustangs led the second game 6-3 when the wheels came off in the sixth inning. The Challengers scored four runs on four hits and a key error, which accounted for the final run of the frame.

Corey Kent's two-out RBI single scored what proved to be the winning run for the Challengers (15-9, 1-3 Area 4).

The Mustangs erased a 3-2 deficit with four runs in the fourth. Ferguson started the two-out rally with a single followed by Folsom's RBI triple. Then Hegdahl hit an RBI double, Abe Eubank an RBI single and Behnke singled to score another run.

We've been on a good roll, said Keck, and we were very close to getting two wins against a good team. We got a lot of hits off quality pitchers.
