Nate Schnugg shines at Morgan Stanley Open
Nate Schnugg upstaged his older brother Scott in the opening day of the &
36;12,500 Morgan Stanley Open at the Rogue Valley Swim and Tennis Club Friday.
The ninth annual tennis tournament, formerly known as the Airport Chevrolet Open, is the first of six United States Tennis Association Pacific Northwest circuit events.
Nate Schnugg of Medford posted two victories to move into today's quarterfinals of the men's open singles division.
The unseeded Schnugg, 15, upset University of Santa Clara senior Taylor Bedilion 6-7 (5), 7-6 (5), 7-5 in the round of 16. He dispensed with Luke Rencher, 6-2, 6-1 in the opening round.
He faces No. — seeded John Devorss, who defeated Ashland's Ari Zaslow 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, in today's quarterfinals at 9 a.m.
— Second-seeded Scott Schnugg cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win against Nicholas Jamros in the second round. Scott Schnugg faces Scott Kennell of Tacoma, Wash., in the quarterfinals at 9:30 a.m.
Tyler Wilson, a 2004 North Medford High graduate, lost an opening-round match to Colby Jager of Corvallis, 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (5).
Defending champion and top seed Matt Hanlin won his only match of the day. All five seeded players in the men's open singles division remain alive going into today's quarterfinals.
Besides the men's open singles, competition continues today and Sunday in women's open singles, men's open doubles, men's 35 singles, men's 45 singles, men's 55 singles, men's 35 doubles and men's 55 doubles.
