Central Point sweeps error-prone Phoenix

TALENT ' The Phoenix American Legion baseball team shot itself in the foot as Central Point capitalized on multiple errors to win both extra-inning games of a doubleheader, 4-3 and 11-9.

In Game 1, Phoenix recaptured its early lead in the last at-bat to send the game into extra-innings.

Central Point's Chris Thomas led off the ninth with a single but advanced all the way to third on a errant pickoff attempt by pitcher Chad Walker. The error compounded as the ensuing throw to third sailed into left field allowing Thomas to score the final run, all of which were unearned.

Jon Smith, Chad Walker, Robert Woodward and Dustin Smith all had two hits apiece for the Bucs.

Central Point relied more on its 17 hits in Game 2 than they did on Buc errors.

— After Phoenix jumped out to an early lead, Matt Hunt's two-run homer for Central Point tied the score at five in the third inning.

Phoenix scored again late in the game, but a two-run rally wasn't enough to overcome Central Point's lead in the bottom of the eighth.

Dustin Smith went 4-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs to lead Phoenix. Jon West also had two RBIs for the Bucs, who dropped to 4-8 on the season.

SOUTH MEDFORD TAKES THIRD AT TOURNEY ' At Newberg, the South Medford Blue Aces 16A fastpitch softball team took third place in the silver division of the 20-team Alaskan Midnight Sun Tournament on Sunday.

South Medford cruised past the Tigard Titans, 9-2, then dropped a 6-3 decision to Cowlitz County Hit and Run in a semifinal contest.

The Blue Aces battled Cowlitz County, a team from Washington, to a three-all tie through four innings. But Hit and Run used a three-run home run in the fifth to grab the lead and the game ended due to the 90-minute time limit.

Coy Conway and Taylor Barrett each had two hits to pace the Blue Aces.

In the victory over Tigard, Desiree Millette and Jessica Ragsdale each had three hits and inside-the-park homers for South.

Conway also had three hits and Colleen Morgan added two, while Barrett recorded the pitching win.
