The North Medford Black Tornado

18-and-under team improved on last year's runner-up finish at the Julie Smith Gold Medal Tournament in Reno Nevada with a 2-0 championship win Sunday over the Reno Bruins.

Deni Rowley

and Katie Gould

led Medford batting .500 through the two-day event. The duo also combined for the final run in the championship game that clinched the title.

Rowley started a two-out rally in the second inning with a single and advanced to second with a stolen base. Gould followed by legging out a bunt that moved Rowley to third. While Gould instigated a run-down situation, Rowley reached home for a 2-0 lead.

It was all the support needed for pitcher Kendra Strahm, who kept Medford out front through all seven innings by allowing only four hits and striking out eight.

North Medford finished 3-1-1 in the tournament.

At Grants Pass, former Crater High and Nevada-Reno pitcher Dave Croft

threw a six-hit shutout to lead the Rogue Valley Reds

Catcher Jon Murphy

and former Stanford player Rick Lundblade

were a potent 1-2 punch for the Reds (23-2) in the series.

Lundblade hit a three-run home run in the third inning and finished the series 5-for-8 with two homers and five RBIs. Murphy also homered twice, going 6-for-9 to improve his average to .550.

In the series opener, Jason Schmidt

spaced 12 hits and struck out six to give the Marlins a 7-6 win, but Rogue Valley won Game 2, 9-5.
