Pirates bag fourth straight Skyline crown

TALENT ' Unbeaten and second-ranked Phoenix had no trouble getting up for North Valley in a Skyline Conference boys soccer match Thursday.

The Pirates had a chance to secure their fourth consecutive league championship, and they wasted little time doing so, scoring six first-half goals in an 8-0 triumph at Colver Field.

Phoenix is 11-0 in the Skyline, two games up on second-place Henley with one game to play ' at Henley Saturday.

North Valley ended its season at 4-8.

We had a good game, said coach Dennis Flenner. We were excited to know and focused on the fact that we could get our hands on the title, and we wanted it. We were defending the title, and we knew we could if we just threw down today. And we did. We played really, really well.

— Jaime Escobedo scored three first-half goals, including the first one four minutes in on an assist from Ricardo DeLaTorre, and the last in the 36th minute on a pass from Uriel Castillo. Escobedo also tallied in the 13th minute with an assist from Kyle McKinnis.

Other opening-half scores were by McKinnis, with an assist from Escobedo; Albaro Gonzalez, on a pass from DeLaTorre; and Aaron Detrick unassisted.

In the second half, Nathan Bursk, a defender, scored 30 seconds in on an assist by McKinnis, then Bursk assisted on Kylar Wilson's goal in the 74th minute.

Getting into the scoring act made it a good day for Bursk.

HENLEY 9, ROGUE RIVER 0 ' At Rogue River, Javier Barajas and Uberto Ortega each scored two goals to lead Henley (9-2) in a rout over Rogue River.

Philip Pena, Zach Sumich, Josh Golden, Brad Asay and Colton Hines also added goals for the Hornets, who clinched at least third place in the Skyline Conference.
