Bursk of energy fuels Pirates against IV

Boys Basketball

PHOENIX ' Phoenix's Nathan Bursk has been there, done that.

Heeding the words of his coach about the importance of the Skyline Conference boys basketball opener, Bursk scored 15 first-quarter points in a 73-43 win over Illinois Valley Tuesday.

He was really ready to play, said coach Kevin Dixon. He's a senior who has been on five conference championship teams (four soccer, one basketball), and he knows what it takes. We had been talking about getting off to a good start.

The game was only the second home contest for the Pirates (7-6 overall) and the first in the main gym. Work on it forced the other home game to be played in the school's small gym.

They were a little excited tonight, Dixon said of his players.

Bursk appeared sufficiently recuperated from a recent illness.

— He finished with 24 points, but he especially made his mark in the first quarter, when he sank three 3-pointers and was everywhere on defense, Dixon said of the 6-foot wing.

Phoenix made 9 of 19 from behind the arc and shot 52 percent overall to the Cougars' 40 percent.

The Pirates led 46-20 at halftime.

Bursk was 10 of 15 from the field, and point guard Justin Krafft was 7 of 10 while contributing 15 points and five assists.

Ben Decuir paced Phoenix on the boards with seven rebounds and Marty Joseph had six.
