Heidegger foul shots boosts Challengers to overtime win

Josh Heidegger redeemed himself in overtime.

The talented 6-foot-2 sophomore struggled down the stretch by missing 5 of 6 from the line as Cascade Christian squandered a six-point lead with one minute to go.

But Heidegger made 8 of 9 free throws in the extra period as the Challengers pulled away for a 68-59 Southern Cascade League boys basketball victory over visiting Riddle at The Pavilion Thursday.

Heidegger finished with 31 points and 15 rebounds.

(Heidegger) carried us tonight, Cascade Christian coach Brian Morse said. One of the keys to the game was Heidegger breaking their press and penetrating up the middle.

— The Challengers (7-5, 1-1 SCL) got a lift from junior forward Joe Ayala, who scored 11 points and hauled in six rebounds.

After Riddle (5-7, 1-1 SCL) took a one-point lead in overtime, Ayala put Cascade on top to stay with two straight field goals on consecutive possessions.

The Challengers had a 38-32 rebounding edge, but the Irish took advantage of 18 offensive boards.

Cascade only converted 22 of 42 free-throw attempts.

This was a must win for us, said Morse. We couldn't afford to lose two league games at home. At one point, it looked like it would slip away with our poor free-throw shooting.
