Hidden Valley gets big road win at North Valley

MERLIN ' Hidden Valley and North Valley got a taste of the postseason a little early.

In a raucous setting, second-ranked Hidden Valley downed the host Knights, 55-38, in a Skyline Conference game Friday.

It was a packed house, said Mustangs coach Norm Hayter. Great fans, loud, noisy, high intensity level; it just felt like the playoffs.

Hidden Valley (12-1, 1-0 Skyline) was led by Jordan Hayter's 18 points as it snapped North Valley's seven-game win streak.

The teams battled through the first half with North Valley holding the advantage after the first quarter, but it trailed by four at the half.

— Both teams came out pretty hot, said North Valley coach Rob Boye. For the first two quarters, it was pretty nip and tuck the whole way.

The Knights (8-6, 1-1 Skyline) knotted the score at 34 late in the third period before Hidden Valley rattled off a six-point run to make it 40-34.

North Valley would never recover as they shot only 2 of 10 in the final period.

We just went cold, said Boye. We just couldn't buy a shot.

The Mustangs took advantage of the opportunity as North Valley began fouling, going 8-for-9 from the line in the fourth quarter.

Nick Hayter scored 11 for Hidden Valley, and Wil Dillon and Josh Gotfried each had seven.

The Knights were led by Quentin Tisch with 12 points and Josh Makepeace with 10. Senior center Andy Shannon hauled in 14 boards.

Shannon, who averages nearly 20 points per game, was held to six by the Mustang defense. Hidden Valley forced the Knights into 18 turnovers while committing only 11 themselves.

We executed a little better down the stretch and were able to pull out the win, Norm Hayter said. It was a tough game.
