Pirates edge Henley for fourth straight win

PHOENIX ' Phoenix's penchant for winning served it well in the late going against Henley Friday.

The Pirates scored 25 fourth-quarter points for a 71-68 Skyline Conference boys basketball victory.

It was their fourth straight win ' all in league ' and raised their overall record to 10-6.

We had that confidence down the stretch, said Pirates coach Kevin Dixon. We took care of the ball and hit some big shots.

Henley dropped to 0-3 in league but is far more dangerous than its record indicates, said Dixon, pointing to the Hornets' six-point loss to second-ranked Hidden Valley Tuesday.

— The game was close throughout.

Henley's Joel Matchett hit a 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer for a 34-32 lead. Phoenix retook the lead in the third, only to fall behind by five entering the fourth.

But with a number of players stepping up, including Justin Krafft and Marty Joseph, the Pirates took control.

Only a Henley trey at the buzzer made the final score as close as it was.

Krafft had 24 points, five rebounds and four assists, and Joseph hauled in 15 rebounds and scored nine points.

He was just dominant in the second half, Dixon said of Joseph. He was unbelievable. Every miss they had, he got the rebound. He was all over the place.

Krafft came up with a huge play when he drove to the basket and made a three-point play, fouling out Henley senior post Skylar Morgan and giving Phoenix the lead with four minutes left.

Morgan scored 19 points.

Ben Decuir had 13 points and seven rebounds for the Pirates, and Kyle McKinnis scored 11 points, including three 3-pointers that all seemed to come at pivotal junctures, said Dixon.
