Crusaders hold off Riddle

Fortunately for the St. Mary's boys basketball team, an ugly win still counts as a win. In a less-than-stellar performance Thursday night, the top-ranked Crusaders beat Riddle 40-29 in a South Cascade League contest.

St. Mary's (12-1, 5-0 SCL) shot 32 percent from the floor, but used a stifling defense to pull away.

We just never got into an offensive rhythm, Crusader coach Rick Jackson said. When you shoot 32 percent from the field and still walk away with an 11-point win, it says something about your defense.

In the middle of that defense Thursday night, was 6-foot-8 post Garrett Fiddler, who swatted away seven Riddle shots. Fiddler also led the Crusaders in scoring with 12 points.

Garrett did a nice job of plugging up the middle, Jackson said. That really forced them to go outside.

— Riddle (3-3 SCL) found limited success outside, where Brett Swett hit three 3-point baskets to finish with a game-high 15 points.

We let [Swett] get a little hot, Jackson said. Most of his shots were contested ... he just hit them.

No other Irish player had more than five points, however.

St. Mary's led by only one after the first quarter, and Riddle hung around until midway through the third quarter, when the Crusaders went on a 9-4 run.

The Crusaders now enter a crucial stretch in the first half of SCL play. St. Mary's travels to second-place Lakeview on Saturday, then hosts reigning league champ Bonanza on Tuesday.
