Challengers fall to Bonanza

BONANZA ' Fortunately for the Cascade Christian girls basketball team, the future is bright due to a roster of mostly underclassmen.

Unfortunately, that leaves the Challengers green for the present That inexperience came into play Saturday afternoon, as Cascade fell to a veteran Bonanza squad, 51-41, in Southern Cascade League girls basketball.

We only have one senior on the roster, Challenger coach Loren King said. When things get tight, our inexperience tends to bite us.

Bonanza's (3-3 SCL) seniors, however, put on a show as Sarah Gomez and Sereena Newman ' key cogs in the Antlers' run to the Southern Cascade League title last season ' combined for 31 points.

They have some girls who have been around, King said. That gives them some stability at the other end.

— The Challengers (10-6, 2-4) trailed by only three heading into the fourth quarter, but Gomez hit two 3-point baskets in the final stanza.

The Antlers converted 14 of 22 free throw attempts to ice the win.

Cascade Christian led by four at the end of one quarter and went into the intermission tied at 15-all.

When we ran our offense, we were fine, King said. We were in it until the final three minutes. We just turned the ball over too many times.
