North Lake late basket cuts down Loggers

BUTTE FALLS ' Butte Falls knew what was coming but couldn't stop it in Skyline A League boys basketball Saturday.

Southern Division-leading North Lake used a late field goal from John Young to register a 62-60 victory over the host Loggers.

Butte Falls, which trailed by as many as 14 points in the third quarter, took a 60-59 lead with 16 seconds remaining on a free throw by junior point guard Chris Stephenson.

After a North Lake timeout, the Cowboys got the ball to senior point guard Young, who hit a running 10-foot bank shot with six seconds left. The Loggers turned over the inbounds pass and, after getting fouled, North Lake made — of 2 free throws for the final margin of victory.

We just couldn't stop (Young) even though we knew it was going to him, Butte Falls coach Lance Bruce said. He's pretty clutch.

— Young finished with 22 points and senior wing Aaron Borlak added a game-high 27 for the Cowboys, who improved to 7-0 in the division.

Young was effective on the dribble penetration, said Bruce, and when we went to help, they were kicking it out to Borlak on the weak side and we didn't have that second rotation.

Butte Falls (9-11, 5-3 Sky A) forced North Lake into 30 turnovers, including 16 in the second half.

We extended to full-court man and started getting some steals, said Bruce. That helped get us back into it. We got some momentum when Chris (Stephenson) hit two 3s in the third quarter and one to start the fourth.

Stephenson and Dillon Ross each tallied 20 points for the Loggers, With Ross adding 11 rebounds and Stephenson coming up with seven steals.

Butte Falls hurt its cause with a 15-for-27 effort from the line.
