Bonanza stuns top-ranked St. Mary's

BONANZA ' The two month run at the top of the Class 2A rankings will most likely come to an end for the St. Mary's boys basketball team.

The Crusaders were outscored 12-4 in the fourth quarter during a 58-53 loss to ninth-ranked Bonanza Saturday night in a Southern Cascade League game.

St. Mary's (15-2, 9-1 SCL), which defeated Bonanza 62-45 the last time the teams met, shot just 3-for-14 from 3-point range and ventured to the free-throw line only eight times.

We played pretty good defense, said Crusader coach Rick Jackson, whose team's 14-game win streak was snapped. Anytime you hold a team to 58 points on the road, that's not a bad job.

We just weren't very aggressive offensively.

— Despite their struggles from the perimeter, the Crusaders led 49-46 entering the fourth quarter.

Bonanza (16-5, 7-3) tied the game at 49-all and Kyle Gomez and Mike Nieraeth combined to make 5 of 5 from the foul line to seal the win down the stretch.

In Jackson's mind, the loss doesn't serve as a wake-up call.

Losing tonight doesn't do us any good, he said. Maybe it's good in the sense we don't have to worry about being No. — anymore.

But we did not need to lose this game.

Garrett Fiddler scored 16 points on 9-for-14 shooting, while Richie Kaimie also poured in 16 on 6 of 7 from the field.

Gomez struck for 18 points ' all in the second half ' and drilled five 3-pointers to lead Bonanza.
