Second-half surge lifts St. Mary's

Austin Grant orchestrated the offense and Garrett Fiddler took command underneath as top-ranked St. Mary's defeated Cascade Christian 70-54 in Southern Cascade League boys basketball Tuesday at The Pavilion.

The Crusaders bounced back from their first SCL loss Saturday at Bonanza, but it wasn't easy.

The Challengers (10-11, 4-7 SCL) used a zone defense and a favorable tempo to play St. Mary's to a 24-all tie in the first half.

We were trying to slow it down, Cascade Christian coach Brian Morse said. We wanted to confuse them with our zone and we had some different movement.

St. Mary's (17-2, 10-1 SCL) turned the situation around after intermission by outscoring Cascade 46-30.

— In the second half we went to the offensive boards real hard and we were able to get some easier putbacks, St. Mary's coach Rick Jackson said. We got some good looks and made some shots that we missed in the first half.

Grant had an impressive line with 17 points on 6-for-9 shooting to go with seven assists and seven rebounds.

Fiddler finished with 21 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks and Richie Kaimie tossed in 13 points.

Sophomore guard Josh Smith had 18 points for Cascade Christian.
