Heidegger equals school record with 37 points

GLENDALE ' It's been 21 years since the Cascade Christian single-game scoring record was set, but the man who did it was on hand Thursday when Josh Heidegger matched it.

In fact, Brian Morse, who enjoyed that hot night in 1984, had a seat on the bench as the Challengers' coach this time in a 73-66 Southern Cascade League boys basketball win over Glendale.

Heidegger, a 6-foot-2 sophomore, poured in 37 points to equal the record by Morse.

I had no idea that he had that many points, said Morse, because it was all in the flow of the game. It was a close game until the very end.

Heidegger was contributing until the final seconds.

— He made four free throws to keep the Pirates at bay, then was involved in a fastbreak that resulted in the Challengers' final points and nearly got him the record.

With 17 seconds left, Daniel Shipley, who scored 11 points, stole the ball and passed ahead to Heidegger.

With a defender on him, Heidegger missed the layup, but Shipley got the rebound, was fouled and made — of 2 foul shots.

Glendale made a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Heidegger's previous high was 31 points against Riddle this season.

Against Glendale, he also had 10 rebounds, four assists and four steals.

Chris Buck tallied 10 points and 12 rebounds for Cascade Christian, which is 11-12, 5-8 in the Southern Cascade League.
