Ashland volleyball falls in semifinals at Albany tourney

ALBANY ' Second-ranked Ashland fell to Crook County in the semifinals of the South Albany Preview Tournament on Saturday.

The Grizzlies defeated Thurston 25-15, 25-11 before being eliminated by seventh-ranked Crook County 20-25, 25-17, 11-15 in the second round of the championship bracket.

Ashland defeated Mountain View, Frankfield and Albany in morning pool-play.

South Medford also earned a trip to the championship bracket, but stumbled against fifth-ranked Jesuit 25-17, 25-18 in the quarterfinal match.

The Panthers lost to West Linn, but rebounded to defeat Sheldon and split the two matches versus Westview in pool play.

— North Medford beat Crescent Valley, but dropped games to Thurston and top-ranked Central Catholic in pool play.

The Black Tornado then moved on to the consolation bracket, where it defeated Springfield 25-14, 25-21 and Lebanon 25-16, 25-19 before losing to Sheldon 19-25.

SANTIAM CHRISTIAN TOURNAMENT ' At Adair Village, Cascade Christian and St. Mary's each lost in the first round of bracket play at the 12-team tournament, which featured some of the top competition at the Class 2A level.

St. Mary's dropped a 19-25, 25-19, 15-11 decision to Blanchet, while Cascade Christian lost to Gervais, 20-25, 25-11, 15-10.

In pool play, the Crusaders took out Monroe before losing to 10th-ranked Santiam Christian and No. 4-ranked Gervais.

The Challengers (4-5 overall), who are also ranked 10th, finished second in pool play, and managed a split with top-ranked Willamina.

Kelsey Reedy led St. Mary's with 29 kills and 43 digs for the tournament. Melissa Lass added 22 kills and 28 digs, while libero Tia Khachitphet had 41 digs and sophomore setter Cynthia Naumes provided 70 assists and eight aces.

Cascade Christian was led by Melissa Gmur's 34 kills, 31 assists, 22 digs and five aces. Also for the Challengers, Megan Brown had 18 kills, five aces and six blocks; Erika Thorpe contributed 11 kills, 27 assists and six aces; and junior libero Kelsey Ost had 26 digs.

POWERS 42, BUTTE FALLS 18 ' At Butte Falls, Powers rushed for 361 yards and five touchdowns in the Skyline A victory.

Mason Lieuallen led the Cruisers with 143 yards on 14 carries, including a 48-yard touchdown run. Dan Lusby had 30 carries for 117 yards and two scores and Kyle Davis ran nine times for 103 yards and two touchdowns for Powers.

Butte Falls' Chris Stephenson notched 17 tackles and an interception return for a touchdown on defense and had 18 carries for 62 yards and a touchdown at running back.

Freshman Sean Sinclair added 12 tackles for the Loggers (1-3, 1-2 Skyline A).

SOUTHERN LEGAUE ' At Eugene, the Medford boys won two matches in overtime after dropping the opener of a three-match outing at Amazon pool.

Medford defeated Marist 17-14 in an overtime shootout for its first victory of the season.

The game ended in a 14-14 tie. In the overtime shootout, Medford got goals from Brad Doll, Zach Haveman and Thomas Gilder.

Lance Abbott led Medford with six goals against Marist, while Jon Lawson tallied three goals and Jordan Rigby and Doll had two each.

Medford goalie Jason Flinn had nine blocks.

Abbott scored a goal on a penalty shot in overtime to lift Medford to a 14-13 victory over South Eugene.

Abbott scored six goals in regulation, while Rigby and Ben Beecher contributed two apiece.

Medford (2-3) dropped a 12-5 decision to Cottage Grove in its opener.

Beecher led Medford with two goals.

The Medford girls fell to 0-5 in league play with losses to Cottage Grove (13-3), Marist (10-5) and South Eugene (18-3).

Medford goalie Jenni Osmanski had 25 blocks on the day.

Elyse Coburn was Medford's leading scorer with five goals, while Lakin Rigby connected four times.

Hillary Burrelle added a pair of goals in the loss to Cottage Grove.
