Challengers turn up 'D' to win title

Umpqua Valley Christian senior post Jeremy Chappel shredded Cascade Christian for 23 points in the first half of the Cascade Christian Christmas Classic boys championship game Thursday night at the Pavilion.

With Chappel doing the brunt of the scoring, the Monarchs built a 26-25 lead at the break.

That's when Challengers coach Brian Morse decided to implement a 1-3-1 zone defense.

The move paid dividends as Chappel scored just four points in the second half and Cascade Christian emerged with a 52-40 victory.

We were playing man-to-man defense in the first half and just couldn't stop him, Morse said. But once we went to the zone, we were able to double-team him and keep him from getting the ball.

Senior post Chris Buck generated 17 points and eight rebounds, and junior wing Josh Heidegger produced 12 points and 10 boards to lead Cascade Christian (7-2).

— The Challengers also got a big lift from Daniel Shipley, who drilled two 3-point baskets in the second half that helped his team pull away.

He (Shipley) took an elbow to the head in the third quarter and had to sit out for a while, Morse said. Then we put him back in and he hit the two 3s.
