Challengers hold off Lakeview for upset

Boys Basketball

LAKEVIEW ' The Cascade Christian boys basketball team finally found its offensive touch. And it couldn't have come at a better time.

Shooting just 37 percent from the field heading into Saturday's game with Lakeview, the Challengers hit 28 of 46 from the field en route to a 71-68 victory over the Honkers.

Josh Heidegger scored a game-high 22 points on 8-for-9 shooting, while Andrew Shipley made 7 of 10 from the field for 17 points.

This year we've shot over 50 percent one time, said Challengers' coach Brian Morse. We finally lit it up.

But the win didn't come easy against Southern Cascade League favorite Lakeview.

Cascade Christian led 61-47 with four minutes to play, only to watch as Lakeview started pecking away at the double-digit advantage.

— We were trading 3s for our 2s, said Morse. The problem was we started turning the ball over and the crowd was getting back into it.

Daniel Hall scored to bring the Honkers (9-2, 1-1 SCL) to within 69-68 with six seconds to play. Heidegger then inbounded the ball to a streaking Shipley for a layup to extend Cascade Christian's lead to 71-68.

Lakeview missed the front end of a 1-and-1 with less than one second to play to end the game.

It's a huge win for us, said Morse. They were picked to win the league by the coaches and Lakeview is generally the hardest place to play in the SCL.

This win is very good for us.

Heidegger also led with 12 rebounds and six assists. Chris Buck added 12 points and nine boards and Shipley dished out five assists.

Shipley and Preston Wipf combined to hold A.J. Clemens to three points over the final three quarters after the senior guard scored 11 of Lakeview's 16 points in the opening period.

Next up for the Challengers is a home clash with rival St. Mary's on Tuesday.
